2020 has thrown all of us for quite a loop!

Virtual learning can feel like a big adjustment, but with some time and the right program and teacher, your learning journey can progress on just like in-person lessons.

#1- Ensure your equipment is ready

Make sure that whatever device you plan to use is charged and the camera lens is cleaned. You don’t want a bunch of smudges blocking the view! During the first few minutes of your first lesson, your instructor should coach you through the best way to angle your camera. For all of your lessons after that, try to set up the same way each time.

#2- Set up your space

A few minutes before your lesson, collect your music and put it by your instrument. If you’re using a music stand set that up too, and maybe grab a pencil. It’s a good idea to make sure you also have a quiet space and good lighting. You want to be able to sit down at your lesson time and jump right in!

#3- Be ready to start on time

A few minutes before your start time, get your instrument prepped and maybe take a moment to warm up and review last week’s assignment. The best way to maximize your lesson time is to be prepared to be totally focused once your lesson starts!

#4- Test out your technology before your first lesson

At Starland, most of our instructors are using Zoom. It’s a good idea to make sure you have the Zoom app or whatever platform you’re using downloaded and ready to go. It may be a good idea to try a test call before the first lesson!

#5- Practice between your lessons

Effective practice is a major part of learning! During virtual learning, practice is just as important as it is in person. Once your instructor gives you an assignment, make sure you understand what it is you need to practice. Try not to rush through your assignment when you practice. Take your time, and take note of any questions you may have for your teacher.

#6- Come with questions

Your instructor has a wealth of knowledge, so tap into it! As you practice throughout the week, be sure to write down any questions that may come up. These can be assignment specific, or just general questions about what you’re learning. Communication is key! Remember that your teacher can only help you with the things they know you need help with.

#7- Have FUN!

We could all use a little bit of brightening up these days. Have fun in your lesson! As you progress, find the joy in learning and enjoy the experience of playing.
